RIAA not suing over CD ripping

Okay, so we’ve done some digging into the RIAA’s lawsuit against Jeffery Howell, in which the industry is claiming that ripped MP3s are “unauthorized copies,” and it turns out that Jeffery isn’t actually being sued for ripping CDs, like the Washington Post and several other sources have reported, but for plain old illegal downloading.

XM stuff

XM & Sirius Promise A La Carte Options – 7/23 – DC’s XM and NYC’s Sirius promise to offer programming on an a la carte basis if their merger is approved. One option would allow subscribers to pick a package of 50 channels for $6.99 per month, almost half of both firms’ $12.95 rate. Then, additional channels could be added for about 25-cents a piece. Also, a “combination” option would allow subscribers of either service to pick 100 channels from both XM and Sirius. More in the DC Post…..

Radio Ratings

More Balto Numbers: Looks Like Jack’s Days Could Be Numbered – 7/29 – A Baltimore radio guru has shed some light on the mysterious spring Arbitron radio ratings released Friday. In the all-important age 25-to-54 numbers, he reports surges for adult contemporary WLIF and classic rock WZBA. But adult hits Jack WQSR is in serious trouble, we’re told, in almost all dayparts. In mornings, Rouse is way up on WLIF and so is JoJo on Mix 106.5. And Elliot is increasing his Baltimore listeners who tune in via DC’s DC101. But Mickey is slumping on 98 Rock, with Kirk and Mark staying level on WHFS. In middays, Ed Norris on WHFS is up big. In afternoons, country WPOC and 98 Rock are way up, with WHFS’s Don and Mike jumping from 12th to 10th. In evenings, WHFS does very well with the Orioles, with huge gains among male demos. On the sports side, WJFK-AM’s Anita Marks is a loser with a big drop in her numbers, while sports talker WNST gets even lower ratings than she does, we hear…..

HFS Gone?

from DCRTV

HFS To Drop Music – 1/15 – DCRTV’s hearing rumblings that CBS Radio plans to kill the alternative rock music from Baltimore’s WHFS (105.7 FM) come 2/1, the day before former 98 Rock morning team Kirk and Mark debut on the station, replacing the DC-based Junkies. Also, we’re hearing that the Free FM branding could be gone, as well, on the new home of the Baltimore Orioles. WHFS, which is talk by day, has been running music at night and on weekends ever since DC-based alt rocker WHFS bit the dust on 99.1 (in favor of Spanish El Zol) in early 2005, with the legendary calls moving to 105.7. DCRTV sister site VARTV reports that Mike Murphy, who had been program director of the musical side of WHFS, will head to Richmond as PD for oldies WBBT and country rock WLFV. Murphy left Richmond’s alt rock WDYL for WHFS in September 2005…..
