Actor Michael Shanks will make the first in a series of guest appearances on the hit FOX series 24 next week, Monday, April 30, according to fan site Michael Shanks Online. Shanks — SG-1’s Dr. Daniel Jackson — will play a Washington lobbyist named Mark Bishop, a new love interest for Lisa Williams (Kari Matchett), assistant to Vice President Noah Daniels (Powers Boothe).
The actor recently discussed his role in an interview with GateWorld.
“There’s a storyline that is going on with the President this year, and an attempted assassination on D.B. Woodside, who plays the President — President Palmer,” he said. “And then taking over for his character is the Vice President. And so there’s an on-going storyline that is involved in the White House that I’m part of.
“My character is a lobbyist, Mark Bishop, who is in a sort of covert relationship with one of Vice President Daniels’ staff. And that will sort of come to fruition in a lot of different ways. And the character also has an ace up his sleeve, as well. So there is a lot more intrigue that goes on than is immediately apparent.”
Shanks will appear in several episodes between now and the end of the season. The opportunity also reunited him with director Brad Turner, who directed several episodes of Stargate SG-1.
“I’m very happy working over there,” he said. “One of my favorite people in the universe, Brad Turner — who directed a few episodes of SG-1 — is a supervising producer over there and has been for a couple of years. And he directed the first two episodes I was in. It’s a wonderful, familiar feeling.”
Turner wasn’t the only familiar face Shanks worked with.
“The gal that plays my love interest is an actress I worked with 13 years ago in Stratford,” he told GateWorld. “And we hadn’t really seen a lot of each other till we showed up on set.”
“It was a very comfortable environment. They have a wonderful crew — it felt very much like home over there, and I’ve enjoyed my time that I’ve spent over there. It’s a lot of fun.”
What’s to come for Shanks beyond Stargate and 24? “Continuing acting, of course,” he told fans at last month’s Official Stargate SG-1/Stargate Atlantis Convention in Vancouver, B.C., hosted by Creation Entertainment. “I plan things as they come. Right now Christopher Judge ["Teal'c"] has written a pilot script that he and I are looking to produce and be executive producers on. That’s something we are working on.”
24 airs Mondays at 9 p.m. Eastern/Pacific on FOX!

NEW LIne wants no more of jackson
from scfi.com
In the latest comment in the controversy surrounding a proposed movie based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, New Line head Robert Shaye told SCI FI Wire in no uncertain terms that the studio won’t work with Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson on that film or any other film. Ever. At least not as long as Shaye is in charge.
Shaye’s comments marked the first time a New Line executive has commented publicly on the fracas since Jackson announced that he has pulled out of the project and also appears to harden New Line’s position against Jackson.
“I do not want to make a movie with somebody who is suing me,” Shaye—New Line’s chief executive officer—said in an interview on Jan. 5 while promoting The Last Mimzy, a New Line family fantasy that marks his first time in a director’s chair since 1990’s Book of Love. “It will never happen during my watch.”
Jackson had told TheOneRing.net in November that he and partner Fran Walsh were bowing out after New Line, which produced the Rings films and has production rights to The Hobbit, told them the studio was moving ahead with The Hobbit without them. Jackson has said he won’t discuss The Hobbit until a lawsuit against New Line over Rings accounting practices is settled.
As far as Shaye is concerned, Jackson is no longer welcome. “There’s a kind of arrogance,” Shaye said. “Not that I don’t think Peter is a good filmmaker and that he hasn’t contributed significantly to filmography and made three very good movies. And I don’t even expect him to say ‘thank you’ for having me make it happen and having New Line make it happen. But to think that I, as a functionary in [a] company that has been around for a long time, but is now owned by a very big conglomerate, would care one bit about trying to cheat the guy, … he’s either had very poor counsel or is completely misinformed and myopic to think that I care whether I give him [anything].”
Shaye, who was also an executive producer on the Rings films, added: “He got a quarter of a billion dollars paid to him so far, justifiably, according to contract, completely right, and this guy, who already has received a quarter of a billion dollars, turns around without wanting to have a discussion with us and sues us and refuses to discuss it unless we just give in to his plan. I don’t want to work with that guy anymore. Why would I? So the answer is he will never make any movie with New Line Cinema again while I’m still working for the company.”
Shaye said that many of the Rings trilogy actors “suddenly, because, I’m guessing, of Peter’s complaint,” have declined to participate in celebrating New Line’s 40th anniversary. “I’m incredibly offended,” he said. “I don’t care about Peter Jackson anymore. He wants to have another $100 million or $50 million, whatever he’s suing us for. He doesn’t want to sit down and talk about it. He thinks that we owe him something after we’ve paid him over a quarter of a billion dollars. … Cheers, Peter.”
New Line’s hardened position against Jackson isn’t the end of the story, of course. MGM, which owns the distribution rights to The Hobbit, on Nov. 20 told Variety through a spokesman that “the matter of Peter Jackson directing the Hobbit films is far from closed.”
In his own online statement, Jackson said that New Line executive Mark Ordesky, who shepherded the Rings trilogy, argued that New Line is dumping Jackson because the studio has a “limited time option” on the film rights, obtained from Saul Zaentz.

Stargate sg-1 to go on….
SG1 will go on as the two direct to dvds movies as planned…this making stargate the second biggest franchise to Bond to MGM. and then perhaps a movie every year thereafter.
Stargate to be spun off again yay!!! Merry Xmas gate travelers
on gateworld.net there was a story about a third stargate series to be produced and to fill the void after SG1 is finished its final 10 episodes. the plan is to have it along side Alantis on SCI fi. but production is being rushed i think to have a premiere in Summer.
In other Stargate related news, production will started on the two SG1 movies in March and June respectiviely. The first one will “wrap-up” the Ori story in some fashion, the second will be a time travel with the villian Bal. (sp)?
Beckett to depart on alantis
from gateworld.net:
One of Stargate Atlantis’s own will not be with the show in Season Four, according to reports. Paul McGillion will no longer be a regular cast member, with his character Dr. Carson Beckett departing in the second half of Season Three.
Fans have speculated about the move for months based on subtle hints from various cast and crew, even establishing a campaign at SaveCarsonBeckett.com before the news was confirmed, to try and change the producers minds. The news was confirmed by executive producer N. John Smith at last week’s Collectormania event in England.
Smith reportedly told fans that Dr. Beckett won’t be killed off, but instead will disappear in the second half of the current season. Though McGillion will not be a regular in Season Four, he may return for future episodes.
The producers made a similar move in Season Two, with actor Rainbow Sun Francks (“Aiden Ford”) departing the show but returning for multiple episodes.
“I think each character is beginning to find the different layers and sometimes the darker side of the characters,” McGillion recently told Eclipse Magazine. “I can tell you one thing for Beckett as a character in the second half of the season, there’s a lot of major plot lines that are developed throughout with Beckett in mind and I think the fans will be in for some big surprises.”
Though the actor refused to comment on Dr. Beckett’s rumored fate until after the episode has aired, he did stress that the show’s producers “do listen to what the fans say.”
McGillion was a recurring guest star in the show’s first season, and promoted to regular cast member in Season Two. His role on the show as Atlantis’s chief medical officer is rumored to be replaced by actress Jewel Staite (Firefly), who will play the recurring role of a medical doctor named Dr. Keller (story).
He said that filming the 2-hour pilot movie, and working with co-star David Hewlett (“Rodney McKay”), have been among the highlights of his three years on Stargate Atlantis. “Working with David Hewlett has been a tremendous experience,” he said. “I just love working with David; we have a really great chemistry acting-wise on the show and he’s become such a good friend of mind as well, so that’s something else that I’ll treasure.”
Visit Eclipse Magazine for the full interview with Paul McGillion. New episodes of Stargate Atlantis are now airing in Canada, and will begin on SCI FI Channel in the U.S. in March.
stargate movies
From gateworld.net
What’s the future of Stargate SG-1? Fans have been wondering and rumors have been flying for weeks since the long-running SCI FI Channel series was cancelled in August (story). Now, at least the first part of that answer is here.
MGM has given a green light for the show’s creators to produce two direct-to-DVD movies based on SG-1. Executive producer Brad Wright let TV Guide in on the news this week.
“It’s the climax of the Ori story line,” Wright said of the first film. The movie will tie up the loose ends from the show’s tenth season, which is expected to conclude its U.S. television run in June. The film will be written and directed by current SG-1 executive producer and show-runner Robert C. Cooper.
The SG-1 cast is not signed for the movies yet, but are said to be “very eager” to continue.
Wright will pen the second film, which will involve time travel.
The producers have previously expressed a desire to set up a third Stargate television series with a film — but it isn’t confirmed yet whether or not this second movie will do just that.
The studio is targetting a fall 2007 release for both projects — just a few months after Stargate SG-1 ends its historic, 10-year run on cable television.
It’s entirely possible that the movies will also be aired on television — something SCI FI commonly does with direct-to-DVD movies.
“They’re not big-budget [films] by any definition, but for us it’s pretty good,” Wright told TV Guide. “As we’ve proven over the years, just give us little more money and we can make pretty good television, or DVDs.”
“There’s a sense of an era for us ending,” he said, “but at the same time, we’re all positive because of the prospect of continuing forward with movies and the introduction next year of Stargate Worlds, a massive multiplayer online game.”
Season Ten of Stargate SG-1 resumes with all-new episodes in March on SCI FI Channel.
Stargate Movies???????
Stargate SG-1 undoubtedly has a future after SCI FI channel cancelled the long-running series last month (story) — but what kind of future is it? A feature film? An eleventh season with another broadcaster? IGN reports this week that, according to unnamed cast members, the studio is currently planning to create a series of SG-1 TV movies.
It is likely that the movies would be broadcast on SCI FI Channel in the United States, but there are no murmurs of a potential broadcaster yet.
Though we do think the story has merit, chalk this one up to unconfirmed for now. And, of course, with production on Season Ten still underway in Vancouver, B.C. and 10 episodes left to air next spring, anything can happen.
