WWE Superstar Dead at age of 40

— World Wrestling Entertainment canceled Monday night’s live show from the American Bank Center after wrestler Chris Benoit and his family were found dead in their home.

According to the WWE web site “There are no further details at this time, other than the Benoit family residence is currently being investigated by local authorities.”

According to the web site of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Benoit, his wife Nancy and their 7-year-old son were found dead in their home in Fayetteville, Ga. around 4 p.m. eastern.

Benoit, originally from Edmonton, had a home in the Atlanta area, where he had wrestled in the now-defunct World Championship Wrestling before joining the WWE.

Benoit started wrestling professionally in 1995 for Stampede Wrestling, based in Canada. He went on to wrestle in Japan before returning to the States as part of Extreme Championship Wrestling. There, he earned the nickname ‘The Crippler’ after breaking Sabu’s neck in a 1994 match.

In 1996, he moved to WCW, where he started a feud with Kevin Sullivan. In a case of art imitating art, Benoit beat Sullivan and won Sullivan’s valet, Woman. Woman was Sullivan’s real-life wife and left Sullivan to become Mrs. Benoit, in real life.

Benoit battled his way to the top of the WCW, winning the WCW world title in January of 2000 and leaving the company the next day.

He surfaced in the WWE months later with friends Eddie Guerrero, Perry Saturn and Dean Malenko, forming the group, the Radicalz. The foursome went their separate directions within WWE, with Guerrero and Benoit finding the most success and both winning the WWE world title.

On November 13, 2005, Guerrero was found dead in his hotel room before a performance.
